Wreck Dive Sites

Irakkandy wreck (SS Ava) | 6-10m

This is a wreck of an 18th century steamer and is close to the dive center. S Ava wrecked in 1858. She was on her way to Suez from Calcutta with women and children refugees from India. There were no casualties, and some mails and cargo were saved. Most of the superstructure was salvaged decades ago, yet the remaining hull parts are in line to see.Fully covered with corals, anemones and good for seeing molluscs, nudibranchs and soft corals.

Navy Underwater Dive Museum and Wreck Dive

Weeraya P311 ( Sandy Bay Gun Boat 03) | 14 - 17m

A military craft/gunboat belongs to the Sri Lanka Navy. The craft was known as the ‘Weeraya” or P311 was in service from 1972 to 2020. Gun boat has rendered a valuable service to the nation over four decades. After decommissioning, it was purposely sunken to be an artificial reef. At the same place, another military craft (Jagatha – P315) was sunken.

Jagatha P315 | 14 - 16m

A military craft/gunboat belongs to the Sri Lanka Navy. The craft was known as the ‘Jagatha” or P315 was in service from 1980 to2020. After decommissioning, it was purposely sunken to be an artificial reef.
